Two days. Two guided experiences. One carefully planned route through Hanoi’s history, street food, Old Quarter, Train Street and countryside.
How I’m approaching 36 hours in Hanoi
Hanoi is a short trip for us—essentially two packed days—so the goal isn’t to try to see everything. I built this itinerary around the experiences we really wanted: the Old Quarter, Vietnamese food, Train Street, historic Hanoi and a look at the city beyond the main tourist streets.
We already have two guided experiences booked: a three-hour Hanoi street food and Train Street walking tour on Saturday evening and a private four-hour vintage military Jeep tour on Sunday afternoon. Everything else is built around those two fixed blocks.
I also wanted the schedule to be realistic. Each activity includes actual transportation time. If the next destination is within approximately ¼ mile, we walk. Otherwise, we use Grab unless a tour operator is handling transportation.
The ¼-mile rule
Walk
Used when the next destination is roughly a quarter mile away or closer, especially around the Old Quarter.
Grab
The default for longer city hops. It saves time and avoids unnecessarily complicated public transportation.
Guide
During booked experiences, the guide controls the schedule, routing and transportation.
Airport
GrabCar for both passengers and luggage, with a large international departure buffer.
Arrival, Old Quarter & Street Food
A deliberately easier first day focused on settling in, Hanoi’s historic center and an evening guided food experience.
Arrive at Noi Bai International Airport
AirportPlanned arrival into Hanoi. The first hour is intentionally reserved for immigration, baggage claim and customs.
Airport → Home
GrabCarHead directly from the airport into central Hanoi. GrabCar makes the most sense with luggage.
Leave luggage at Home
HomeThe room may not be ready yet, so the plan is simply to leave luggage and start exploring.
First Hanoi Meal: Phở
Eat LocalThe first proper meal in Hanoi should be Hanoi-style phở. Northern phở generally places more emphasis on a clean, aromatic broth and tends to be less sweet and less heavily garnished than southern versions.
Hoan Kiem Lake
WalkStart with the northern and eastern sides of Hanoi’s famous central lake. This is less about rushing through a checklist and more about getting a feel for the city.
Explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter
WalkWander the narrow streets, cafés, storefronts and street stalls. The objective isn’t to cover every famous street—the guided tour tonight will take us deeper into the neighborhood.
Keep Lunch Light
Eat LocalTonight’s guided tour includes six food tastings, so lunch should intentionally be smaller than normal.
Return Home & Check In
WalkReturn to Home, complete check-in and settle into the room.
Regroup at Home
Protected HourThis hour is intentional. After flying, clearing immigration and walking through Hanoi, we stop instead of immediately forcing another attraction into the schedule.
Vietnamese Coffee
CoffeeHead back into the Old Quarter for one of Hanoi’s signature drinks: cà phê trứng, or egg coffee.
Another option is cà phê sữa đá, Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk.
Freshen Up for the Tour
HomeReturn Home, change if necessary and prepare for several hours of walking and eating.
Travel to Tour Meeting Point
GrabThe tour meeting point is in the Old Quarter at 1 P. Tống Duy Tân. Arrive well before the official starting time.
Hanoi Street Food, Hidden Alleyways & Train Street
Guided TourFrom here, the local guide controls the schedule. The tour explores food stops, Old Quarter streets, hidden alleyways and Train Street.
Potential tastings
The included Train Street drink may be egg coffee, beer, lemon juice or another available beverage.
Hanoi After Dark
FlexibleIf we still have energy, spend a little more time in the Old Quarter. Walk, stop for a drink, find a café or simply return Home early.
Historic Hanoi, Vintage Jeep & Departure
The structured sightseeing day: Hanoi’s historic core in the morning, a private Jeep experience in the afternoon and one final local dinner before the airport.
Vietnamese Breakfast
Eat LocalSince Saturday begins with beef phở, Sunday breakfast is a chance to try another Vietnamese breakfast dish.
Home → Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
GrabThis is beyond the walking threshold, so Grab is the most efficient choice.
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum & Ba Dinh Square
Historic SiteBa Dinh Square is one of the most historically significant places in modern Vietnam, while the mausoleum is the resting place of Ho Chi Minh.
One Pillar Pagoda
WalkThis landmark is close enough to the mausoleum complex that there is no reason to call a car. Walk approximately five minutes.
The Buddhist pagoda is famous for its unusual single-pillar design and is one of Hanoi’s recognizable historic landmarks.
One Pillar Pagoda → Temple of Literature
GrabTemple of Literature
CultureFounded in the 11th century and associated with Vietnam’s first national university, the complex contains traditional courtyards, gates, gardens and historic stone stelae.
This is one of the cultural stops I most wanted to preserve even within such a short visit.
Temple of Literature → Home
GrabReturn instead of squeezing in another attraction. The afternoon guide is scheduled to pick us up at 12:30 PM.
Prepare for Jeep Tour
HomeCool down, refill anything we need, use the restroom and get ready for several hours outside.
Private Vintage Military Jeep Tour
Private GuideAt 12:30 PM, the private guide and driver take over. I am deliberately leaving the entire four-hour block under their control rather than trying to dictate every stop.
The experience includes
Possible countryside experience
Depending on conditions and the guide’s route, the experience may include areas around Banana Island and the Red River, providing a very different view from the dense Old Quarter.
Heavy rain or flooding can affect access to some countryside locations, so those route decisions remain with the guide.
Train Street
Train Street may also appear on the route depending on local access rules and train schedules. Since Saturday already includes a dedicated Train Street experience, a second visit is a bonus rather than a requirement.
Regroup at Home
Protected HourAnother full hour is protected after the Jeep tour. It also works as a useful schedule buffer if Hanoi traffic causes the tour to return slightly late.
Final Hanoi Dinner: Bún Chả
Eat LocalFor our final independent meal, I want one of Hanoi’s signature dishes: grilled pork served with rice vermicelli, fresh herbs and dipping broth.
The restaurant should be close to Home. This is not the time to spend 30–40 minutes crossing Hanoi just to chase a famous restaurant.
Final Packing
Departure PrepLeave Hanoi for Noi Bai International Airport
International FlightGrabCar is the simple choice with luggage. The trip from central Hanoi to the airport can take roughly 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.
The buffer covers airline check-in, baggage, security and outbound immigration. I’d rather spend an extra hour inside the terminal than end the trip worrying about Hanoi traffic.
Hanoi food checklist
The food is not an afterthought in this itinerary. Between independent meals and the guided food tour, these are the Vietnamese dishes I want represented during the trip.
Phở bò
Hanoi-style beef noodle soup.
Phở gà
Chicken phở with northern-style broth.
Bún chả
Grilled pork, noodles, herbs and dipping broth.
Bánh cuốn
Thin steamed rice rolls with savory filling.
Bánh mì
Vietnamese baguette sandwich.
Xôi
Vietnamese sticky rice with savory toppings.
Nem rán
Crispy Vietnamese fried spring rolls.
Cà phê trứng
Hanoi’s rich, dessert-like egg coffee.
Cà phê sữa đá
Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk.
What I’m intentionally not adding
Hanoi has far more to see than we can realistically cover in this trip. The objective is not to turn 36 hours into an endurance event.
Halong Bay and Ninh Binh in particular deserve substantially more time. Trying to squeeze either into this itinerary would mean sacrificing much of our actual experience of Hanoi.
The strategy behind the itinerary
Use guides where they add value
Two guided experiences give us local knowledge without surrendering the entire trip to organized tours.
Cluster destinations
Nearby attractions are grouped together so we’re not repeatedly crossing the city.
Protect downtime
A full hour at Home each day gives us time to reset instead of slowly becoming exhausted.
Build in traffic buffers
Hanoi traffic is unpredictable. The schedule deliberately has enough flexibility that a 15-minute delay shouldn’t break it.
